GPS Tracking - Featured Review
Vehicle tracking technology has advanced in the past
few years to the point where GPS
tracking is now available
for the small to moderately sized business. The global
positioning system (GPS - which is run by the US military)
is utilized by the private sector for everyday
business applications. GPS
vehicle tracking devices
are now used for fleet management and private
investigation. Affordable GPS vehicle
tracking is made possible by using cellular wireless
communications. Recently, with the
introduction of digital wireless networks, the reliability
and accuracy has now been boosted.
Global Tracking Communications, Inc. (GTC) is a manufacturer
of a complete line of GPS tracking devices and is the
featured website in this review. They have developed
several cost-effective vehicle tracking devices that
utilize either digital cellular or satellite communication.
These devices offer vehicle tracking solutions for
fleet managers and private investigators. The most
economical would be cellular service because it is
less expensive than satellite service. Products range
from real-time vehicle tracking, heavy equipment reporting
to passive tracking. Most of the devices use web-based
monitoring using a browser. Their top of the line product,
the Locator 2000 NavPLUS, supports end-to-end Internet-based applications
on laptops or PDAs and uses Microsoft's MapPoint digital
mapping system, the best digital mapping system available
in today's market.
GPS Tracking Products
The company offers 3 cellular
real-time vehicle tracking devices, two with constant
monitoring and one with on-demand monitoring. Their
top 2 products, the Locator 2000 NavPLUS and the L2000 support cellular
real-time vehicle tracking with web-based digital
mapping. The Locator 2000 NavPLUS uses Microsoft's MapPoint digital
mapping. Their Mobile
Location Unit (the MLU) features on demand
monitoring. This unit is best when there is no need
for constant monitoring.

The Validator
5000 is one unit that uses satellite
real-time vehicle
tracking, which uses a web-based
control center. Also offered is a Heavy
Equipment Unit (the HEU-1) which uses cellular tracking to monitor
the location of heavy equipment such as trailers and
other equipment. They also offer a passive tracking
unit, the Validator
2000, which has the advantage that
it does not require any monthly subscription fees.
In addition to GPS
tracking, GTC products support
a myriad of features. The Locator 2000 NavPLUS and the L2000 support "geofencing" where
the unit can be configured to alert the operator if
the vehicle strays from predefined boundaries. These
products also support real time mapping with bird's
eye and street level views.
Even the passive device offers extensive reporting
and mapping such as speed, stop, mileage and idle.
It holds over 15000 records, has more than 20 reports
and graphs and has 5 sensors that enable it to monitor
doors, lights, switches and PTOs.
Website Features
One of the nice features of the website is the GPS tracking online
demo offered for the Locator 2000 NavPLUS and the L2000. The sites
FAQ is very informative and breaks down the technical
jargon into easy to understand format. This page is
must read for any business who is considering a purchase.
The FAQ explains in detail the difference between satellite
communication and cellular communication, and emphasizes
the need for using a digital vs analog cellular wireless
network. The FAQ also discusses GSM/GPRS digital cellular
protocol, which is used by GTC.
Plenty of Illustrations and Documentation
The website is fully documented. Each product has
an accompanying brochure in downloadable PDF format.
Some of the products have nice screen shots of the
reporting and monitoring features of the product such
as sample mapping screen shots and birds eye and street
level views.
