DENVER, CO – On August 9, 2011, Quark Inc., maker of QuarkXPress page layout software, has announced that the company has been acquired by Los Angeles-based private equity firm, Platinum Equity. This is huge news because QuarkXPress is a major software application for page layout, used by designers all over the world.

QuarkXPress was one of the first major page layout applications to be used by professional designers since the late 1980s. At that time, there were only a few page layout applications to choose from. Its competition mainly came from Aldus PageMaker, which was later in 1994 acquired by Adobe Systems and Xerox Ventura Publisher, which was later acquired by the Corel Corporation in 1993. Quark Inc. offers low price upgrade from QuarkXPress 3, 4, or 5 before September 30, 2009.

If you think your old QuarkXPress® 3, 4, or 5 licenses are beyond use, Quark is offering a great deal. Until September 30, 2009, you can upgrade ANY previous version to QuarkXPress 8 for one low price. For $299.00 USD (North America) you can upgrade version 3, 4 or 5 to version 8. In the past, its been my experience that the $299 upgrade deal was only offered for the most recent previous version and only for a short time (I think it was about 30 days).

This is a huge departure from Quark’s previous position on upgrades. In the past they were more strict, and the $299 upgrade offer was very limited. If you have been thinking about upgrading but didn’t have the cash, then this would be a good opportunity to take advantage of the deal.

Welcome to the Sketchpad.net Blog. Previously, you could find all the new tutorials at the “Newest Pages” page, but there was no way for you to catch any revisions. For example, I recently revised the QuarkXPress® Tips page. There you will find a faster and easier way to add hanging indents to your QuarkXPress layouts.

Keep checking back here at the blog to find the latest free fonts. Mike’s Sketchpad is proud to announce that we will be offering free OpenType® OTF (PostScript®) fonts whenever they become available. For example checkout “Generic Tech”, “5 x 6”, “Space Gothic” and “Metro Mono”. These are the first OpenType free fonts available at the Sketchpad.net free fonts archive.

Mike’s Sketchpad provides Photoshop tutorials, free fonts plus news, articles and other resources for the graphic arts professional.
